Sixth Annual ChessHelps Tournament - August 24 2019

Sixth Annual ChessHelps Tournament - August 24 2019 at BASIS Chandler

I say this every year but it seems surreal that ChessHelps has hosted its 6th tournament. Before I head out to college for my sophomore (believe me college is moving faster than high school), Jonathan and I got to host another successful event.

Event info, advance entries and cross tables here:

Welcome speech:

Guest of Honor Mayor Hartke of Chandler

Tournament Directors L-R: Jonathan Martinez, Aiya Cancio, Zak Cancio

ChessHelps recognized Martha Underwood for her contributions to chess in Arizona. Martha has been instrumental in bringing chess and chess tournaments to Arizona. She is a noted chief tournament director in the US Chess circuit and is part of the National chess scene. Girls in chess are under represented and she has worked tirelessly with several organizations to make it more fun and accessible to girls especially with the Susan Polgar foundations that conduct the girls chess camps and also the girls only tournaments.

Martha will also tell you that she almost beat me when I was in 4th grade, it is a game we both remember with joy.

Thank you Martha for all your wonderful contributions to Chess.

I would not be able to continue these tournaments without the help and support of BASIS Chandler. Thank you for letting me use the facility and also a big thanks to both Mr. Fritzmiller and Mr. Hosto but coming in on a Saturday and helping out.
Mr. Fritzmiller, Head of Basis Chandler

Concessions, manned by my cousins
